Glossary
Terms commonly used in paranormal research.

 

Anomaly:
A deviation from the common rule, type, arrangement, or form.

 

Apport:
A material object that seems to appear from nowhere and cannot be explained.

Apparition:
A supernatural appearance of a person or thing, esp. a ghost; a specter or phantom; wraith

 

Asport:
A material item that disappears without explanation.


Cold Spot:
An area that has a lower temperature than it's surroundings.

Coloration:

This usually sounds either like a ringing in the ears or white noise and can sometimes feel like a pressure change.

 

Correlation:

An association between two or more events or variables.


ESP:
Extrasensory Perception: perception or communication outside of normal sensory capability, as in telepathy and clairvoyance.


EVP:
Electronic Voice Phenomenon.

EMF:

Electro-magnetic field.

Entity:
T
hat which is perceived or known or inferred to have its own distinct existence.

 

False Positive:

Data that appears to contain paranormal activity but it caused by natural interference (ie. dust, moisture, or insects in photographs can appear to be orbs or streaks of light)


Ghost:

A returning or haunting memory or image.

 

Kinetic activity:
Movement of an object that cannot be explained.

 

Local Sidereal Time (LST):
Time with respect to the stars instead of the sun. Some studies have shown that more paranormal activity occurs around 13 hours LST.

Luminous Phenomena:

Strange lights or glows, often around objects or people.

Near Death Experience (NDE):

Experiences of people after they have been pronounced clinically dead, or been very close to death.

Orb:

A spherical, translucent mass resembling a ball or globe of light. They are the most photographed anomaly in paranormal investigation as well as being a very common false positive.  Orb-like images can be caused by moisture (rain, snow, fog),  insects, smoke, and dust.

Out of Body Experience (OBE):
A fully conscious experience in which the person's center of awareness appears to be outside of the physical body.


Paranormal:

Beyond the range of normal experience or scientific explanation.
 

Parapsychology:
The experimental and quantitative study of paranormal phenomena.


Poltergeist:

A ghost that manifests itself by noises, rappings, and the creation of disorder.


Psychic:
A person who is allegedly sensitive to psychic influences or forces; medium.

Spirit:

The soul regarded as separating from the body at death.

Supernatural:
Of, pertaining to, or being above or beyond what is natural; unexplainable by natural law or phenomena; abnormal.

Vortex:

Often the shape of a tube or funnel; a spiral motion of fluid within a limited area, especially a whirling mass of water or air that sucks everything near it toward its center.  Some believe it may be in connection with a portal or doorway.

White Noise:
Acoustical or electrical noise of which the intensity is the same at all frequencies within a given band.
